Gilgit-Baltistan
Hunza Valley runs along the Karakoram Highway in Gilgit-Baltistan, ringed by peaks such as Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar. Most visitors base themselves in Karimabad or Aliabad, or further up the valley in Gulmit and Passu, close to Attabad Lake.

April to October. Spring brings apricot and cherry blossom, summer is the busiest season, and late October to early November turns the poplars gold. Winter is cold, and some guest houses close until spring.

Fly from Islamabad to Gilgit — flights depend on the weather — and drive up the Karakoram Highway from there. By road from Islamabad, most people split the journey over two days.
Karimabad suits a first visit: it is walkable, close to Baltit and Altit forts, and has views of Rakaposhi. Aliabad is the practical choice on the highway, and Gulmit or Passu are quieter bases near Attabad Lake.
